Grammarly and Sentence Writing
brainstorming from notebook... not necessarily great writing... more of a braindump
September 16th
This morning I messed around a bit with Grammarly. It can write compound and complex sentences if asked. I'm thinking about using it to teach sentences this year. It will be an experiment, but it might be worth a try. I have been experimenting with Grammarly, Google Gemini, and ChatGPT.
Initially, I helped a student with his assignment using Grammarly. It frustrated him so much that he asked how to disengage it.

I've put some time into looking for articles about using AI to teach writing using AI and looking for some different platforms. I am excited that I will indeed use Grammarly to teach sentences this year. I'm using it for my first observation with my QComp coach. She previously taught 9th ELA and is also curious about how it will work. She is going to look at student engagement because I feel students might be frustrated figuring out what prompts to use. Also, will students merely copy and paste, or will they look it over? What will student engagement look like in this platform?
I've also found Brisk which is a platform for teachers. It can give feedback on student writing. I've looked at it and think it's decent. It also can modify by grade level and can use a rubric I use in class. I haven't had a chance to use it with student writing, but I have used it with my examples/.
