More from the Notebooks

October 9th

I used Grammarly the last two days to help students write sentences.  It took a while for everyone to load the extension, understand the editing,  and write specific prompts.  Once everyone was set with the extension, I showed them how to write specific prompts to have Grammarly write the sentences.  As a class, we discussed when it worked and didn't work.  Sometimes when they asked for a compound sentence, it gave the a complex sentence and vice versa.  The students realized they still needed some sentence (and clause) knowledge to use the platform successfully.

Typically, I have students color code dependent and independent clauses in their sentences.  Even though Grammarly writes the sentences for them, they still need to know which clauses are involved.

Students used Grammarly for 10 of the 15 sentences on the test.  The wrote three sentences without using technology.  They used Grammarly before writing their sentences without technology.  I think this also helped in their learning.

60% of students thought it helped them write sentences.

Most improved their sentences.

Overall, students kept Grammarly on their computer although many toggle between on and off although several students did remove it completely.
