Main Idea and Supporting Details
The beginning of each unit is difficult to navigate as I try to see how students will/can use AI to help and/or to cheat. As we start notetaking for research, we are using an audio clip about parrots in NYC. I then, found a news article to go along. The morning of the lesson, I decided to see what would happen if I typed, "Highlight main ideas and supporting details and paraphrase." Grammarly did as I asked.
Students wrote (paper and pencil) anything that would help them find the main idea and supporting details as they listened to the video. In another document, they wrote the main idea and supporting details. Due to this process, I knew AI wasn't used.
For the article, I asked students to highlight anything that would help find the main idea and supporting details as they read the article. In another document, as with the listening, they wrote the main idea and supporting details. I also believed that this process was done without AI.
Now, as a teacher, I ask myself, "What is the point of asking students to find main ideas and supporting details?" I do think it's important to be able to look at information and find out what is important. Perhaps students don't need to take notes, but they do need to be able to evaluate information.
